There once was a great writer who had achieved all the fame and wealth he had ever imagined. He spent countless hours trying to figure out what was “missing” from a life of such privilege. While vacationing in one of his many beachfront homes he performed his normal routine of rising early for his coffee and attempting to enjoy his morning paper on the deck of his massive home. As he peered down the shore, he saw a small figure in the distance that stood alone on the beach. He watched the figure for quite some time and finally decided, since it was such a beautiful morning, to take a stroll on the beach. As he strolled along he noticed there were hundreds of starfish that had washed up on the shore during the early tide and they covered the shoreline as far as the eye could see. As he began to get closer and closer to the figure he noticed it was a small child about the age of seven.

As he drew even closer, he saw a young boy picking up starfish and throwing them back into the ocean. The man was truly perplexed and when he got close enough to communicate with the young man he asked him, “What are you doing? There are thousands of starfish on this shore and I have been watching you for quite sometime picking them up one at a time and tossing them back into the sea. What does it matter? There are so many.” The young child looked up at the gentleman and then looked at the starfish he held in his hand and said, “To this one it matters very much.” and he gently tossed the helpless creature back into the sea where it would have a chance to begin again.

We pass many starfish in our lifetime.
