“Why are there so many songs about rainbows, and what’s on the other side?” These words written by Paul Williams give each of us a chance to ponder how we can get to that other side and if the answers to all our heartaches and disappoints in life can be found there.

There have been so many songs written about rainbows that promise hope for each of us that, if we can just hold on for one more day, a better tomorrow is on the horizon. The problem is some people have lost all hope and direction, and they can no longer even envision the symbolic meaning behind a rainbow. Their life has been filled with so many hardships, disappointments and heartaches that they have given up on life and come to the “End of the Rainbow”. You see these people sleeping in doorways, shelters, begging for money or food just to survive that very day. We all know that rainbows are simply ephemeral illusions that fade and disappear the closer we get to them, but we still gather strength from the beauty and the inspiring message they represent. So, as members of society we need to make sure there is a rainbow of hope for all that seek it. We also need to ensure that the “life tools” that they will need to guide them through the journey for the rest of their life are available so they can consistently create their own rainbows. They deserve a chance, and it is up to us to help give them that chance.

There are two types of people in the world. Those who have been given the tools to navigate through life, either through their faith or from their parents, and those who have never been given the tools needed to make it safely through life. In simple terms, it is not their fault and it is up to us to provide those critical survival tools to every individual that is willing to accept them. In America, we tend to do that through charity organizations but in many cases that is ALL we are providing people–charity. We provide them with the essentials to survive or to live and breath but not the most critical tools they need such as motivation, hope, self-esteem, goals, faith, and a the ability to see the rainbow that will give them a reason to hope and help them learn to stand on their own two feet.

The greatest natural disaster to hit America was hurricane Katrina. Images flashed constantly across the TV screen showing shattered lives beyond our comprehension. Individuals who have lost everything from family members to their homes, but, in spite of the indescribable tragic loss, the statement you constantly hear is, “We will rebuild and we will make it.” These people have hope and can see that there is a rainbow in the distant future. They have the “life tools” needed to start seeing rainbows again. It may be a long time coming, but it will appear again, and they know it.

You also see the faces of many in New Orleans that may have never really seen a rainbow before this disaster took place, and now they are ill-equipped to deal with the devastation around them and in their personal lives. They have not only lost all their material goods but they have now lost their way.

As they look now at their community there is no rainbow in the distant future, but it is there, hidden, waiting to reappear, waiting for them to take the first step towards facilitating the reappearance of their rainbow through the rain. We can help them by teaching them how to use tools necessary to make the rainbow shine in their lives once again.
